Write to the House of Representatives:
I am writing you today as your constituent to ask you to cosponsor and support passage of H.R. 303, the Retired Pay Restoration Act, which would end the unjust practice of requiring military retirees who are service-connected disabled below 50 percent to endure a dollar for dollar offset of benefits they need to provide for their families.
We are still a nation at war. With troops actively engaged in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, and in 167 other countries around the world, it is service members and their families who have selflessly borne the burden of defending America. They are the ones left with the scars of war, seen and unseen. They must not be forced to sacrifice their earned benefits.
Please do not allow Congress to balance the federal budget on the backs of those who have dedicated their career to military service. Military retirement pay and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) disability compensation are earned for different reasons. It is unjust to reduce the benefits of military retirees based on the percentage of service-connected disabilities. Particularly shameful is the portion of the current law that forces those medically retired to choose between their military retirement and VA disability compensation.
As your constituent, I urge you to cosponsor H.R. 303, the Retired Pay Restoration Act, which would end the unjust offset between military retirement and VA disability compensation. These are benefits earned through tireless and honorable service to our country. Pay those who served what they deserve!
